Wolfram Alpha is a computational knowledge engine which computes answers using data from public and licensed databases. It answers questions which have factual answers and attempts to give as much useful information to the user as possible. When giving an answer to a question it may also use relevant visualizations such as a graph or a map.
Wolfram Alpha has many parallels with Cyc, a project aimed at developing a common-sense inference engine since the 1980s, though without producing any major commercial application. Cyc founder Douglas Lenat was one of the few given an opportunity to test Wolfram Alpha before its release.
