hi
can you please tell me what should be the number right answer in optional and GS to qualify for mains. For 2009 exam.

Naresh said...

Hi Ady09,
although UPSC officially never declared the cutoff of PRel so its only a guess and normally 220 out of 450 are enough to get thru prel.
But never forget that there must be some scaling for optionals which no one knows how that work out in case of UPSC, also some claims that there must be some minimum score for GS but a few also feel otherwise.
So I can only say you can assume that around 220 score with minimum 60 marks in GS is good enough.

Hi Anviti,
there is no separate cut off for History as such, its decided by combined marks in ur optional and GS.

Anonymous said...

hi,
please tel me if there is there any concession of marks for the reserved categories at the pre level??

Naresh said...

yes the cut off is slightly lower for reserved categories

Naresh said...

optional score of 90 (marks) then you will need around 130 out of 150 in GS.But I will add here that by optional score of 90 I think you mean marks from 300.

Hi!my gs score adds upto 71 n my sociology score is 75.. pls tell me my chances of getting thru pre????

Naresh said...

If that was number of questions correct then you must start preparing for mains. If thats the number of marks (each right answer carries 2.5 in optional and 1 in GS )then I would say there are some doubts about that.
220 + marks are good score in most of conventional papers like pub admn, geo, socio etc. and more the number and better the chances thats what I feel and may others differ.

its combined but there is some minimum percentage require in both thats only known unofficially as UPSC not declare the cutoff.

Does the cut off marks differ with each optinal? What will be the cut off for Geography?

Naresh said...

@ Amit : start preparing for mains buddy.
@ Ragahvendra : yes it varies a little with optionals, if the paper is easy after scaling the actual marks become lower than what you scored and if the paper is tougher your score will be more than actual score. With Geo I think 220-240 is good enough.

Naresh said...

Hi Amit,
sometimes there are many discrepancies in the answer keys provided by coaching institute so no one can be sure how much u score, since it seems u r nearabout that magic figure so without wasting time start preparing for mains is what I thought better option for you and also those who think they have atleast some chances to get thru prel.
Students are trying to make UPSC more transparent in its functioning like other PSC and for that they have filed RTI applications also ans some cases are pending.

amit said...

Hi Sir
Thanks a lot for your reply so soon..
One more thing I am plannning to take psychology as my second optional.
Is that the right decision?

Hi Guys...Whats a safe score for physics as an optional in prelims? I am getting 75 correct in physics + 35 in GS = 222.5 (after assuming 3/4 doubtful ans as wrong in GS)...Is Physics cut-off normally higher than Humanties/Social science subjects or lower?

Any suggestion wud be highly appreciated!

Akash said...

Hello Sir,

Need a clarification on a perception.

Say a candidate crosses cut off marks in GS ( lets say 55 ), and his/her total crosses 225 marks, then there is a bright chance for his/her qualifying in prel.

I mean crossing over a cut off in GS and the total cut off marks seems to be the equation. Optional cut off has no hard and fast demarcation.

Can you please qualify this inference with any updates on it.

Thanks,
Akash

with regard
Abhishek kumar singh

Naresh said...

hi Abhishek,
it seems you are on the safer side, well its heard that there is some minimum marks criteria in both papers but no one knows for real and I know some ppl who say that there GS score is very low but they get thru prel. so start preparing for mains.

not come across with comm. key for now, if some one has that plz share with us.

@ Akash : the weightage of optional is double so if one crosses the cutoff of GS (if any) then s/he can depends wholly on optional b'coz one can score around 100 in GS then one needs another 120 in optional which is possible only if one score sufficiently high in optional.

@ HArish : I think you can easily get thru this stage with those marks.

@ Sidhartha : as I told earlier only those opt PHy and science subject who have any background and are confident to perform good so as per scaling formula used by various state PSC's the scaled marks normally comes down in these papers. so normally its higher from other subjects.

Naresh said...

@ Neha and Neeraj : the cut off will remain around 200 +/- 20 and don't worry even if u get marks below that because there has been scaling so your actual marks can increase so don't waste time if you have that score. Also the keys provided by all these institutes has lots of discrepancies. Once I come across Pub Admn key from three institutes(said to be best in the business) but they provide different answers to some 20 questions, really that was bizarre but if you have confidence in your answers go for your instincts.
Good Luck to All.

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the reply Naresh.

I understand now that Cut-off for physics is high..but I was wondering if you have some idea what the cut-off has been for physics in 2007 and 2008 (after negative marking being introduced) and what is a minimum safe score to clear the prelims with physics!

Once again thanks for taking out time to reply all the queries and maintaining this helpful blog!

Naresh said...

@ Sri Ram : Hello Sriram there are every chance that u will write mains, so why wait start preparing for mains .

@ "sEE" b4 uR eYEs Can sEE.. : mailed the key to your id .

@ Amit : there is no separate cutoff for Geo as such its the combined marks that decide the cutoff.

@ k1124/ 206 in PH : easily get through the prel.

@ Sachin : 230 is safe bet with Pol Sc but it can even go down too.

@ Pub Admn 215-220 is comfortable score.

@ Mohan : you are right in pointing that examrace has the same key as that of parikshaguru and you know they not even give credit to them, the file in mediafire is uploaded by me on one of the request in comments and I specifically mentioned that its the one that's there on pariksha guru.

@ Krishanan : 213 is good score in Socio, so why you are so worried start preparing for man dear.

@ Sidharth : Thanks for the complement. Since UPSC not reveal the cutoff and I am not in touch with students who opt Physics as optional so can't help much in that matter.

200+ with Geo and Socio or most of other optionals is a good score and hopefully you will easily get thru prelims,

@ Deepak : 127 with any subject is little difficult even in reserved catg.

@ Tamn you are right in saying that scaling is a method to bring all subjects at par but how far its possible is under doubts but still it happens and your score 190 + is OK may be u get thru but 200 + is more comfortable score I would say that again.

@ renu singh, in my opinion you can clear the prel as 200 + can be a good score with geo. Also you consider there are always some doubtful questions and no single key is absolutely right so better prepare for mains rather than going thru all these statistics.

naresh sir, first let me applaud the great endeavour u've taken up to help candidates-sir,im a general category candidate, this is my second attempt at IAS- last year i was getting 192 in PT[52x2.5=geo;62=GS].. and I cleared the PT but not mains, this year -2009- im getting JUST 199[56x2.5=geography;59=GS]..given the number of seats this yr.is around 890, 100 more than prev.year ..sir,what r my chances of clearing PT ?..i started prep'n for mains but still im really desperate and a bit apprehensive..pls help.urs sincerely, ramesh kartikay.

Naresh said...

Hi Ramesh,
first of all thanks for ur encouragement and secondly you urself has given the answer of what u want to ask as u have said that last year u qualify for mains with 192 when seats are around 800 and this yr its 890 and u r also scoring 199 so why to fear u will surely get thru thias and utilise this precious time in preparing for mains and improve upon those fields where u think u can score more in comparision to ur earlier attempt.
good luck.

Anonymous said...

sir, im thankful that u replied .. it'd definitely boost my morale.yes sir, ur correct to point out the fact that as seats increase there is much chance that the cut-off gets lower/or/more students qualify for writing mains..its just the fact that keeping in touch with some 'prestigious' coaching and their MASTER-BLASTERS of the subjects , sometimes is a great depresser..to tell u, i talked to nos.of people i know who belong to such REPUTED coaching institutes and let me assure everyone -they are more OFF-THE-REALITY than WHAT even a common student can guess or tell, they dont seem to realise that general study/GK isnt so easy for EVERYONE ,given the schooling/university system we've and many subjects that seem easy on paper have different exam conditions .. yet they have sky limits.. well naresh sir, i wasted last time by joining a coaching when at the end of day -they were distributing 'material' copied from books, net etc..and such vague analysis that noone has time to write so much in such li'l time in exams.. i m not repeating it this time-self study..lots of revision.. practice.. thats it!thanks naresh sir once again..urs sincerely, ramesh kartikay.

Hello Sir,

Really appreciate the service you are providing.
What I could say is " Jai Hind " ...

Sir,
With the discussions above in the blog, I feel i will be through Prel this time with Geo as optional as I am getting around 229 total.

Sir,
My second optional is Psychology and I am loving preparing it ( started with second optional first for mains 2009 )

presently, i am working in a s/w firm.
What do you suggest about quitting this job ?

As per me, i am able to extract say 6 hrs daily, but this does not match with the criteria to get in the list.

Could you throw some light on how to go about for mains 2009?
I mean till what time and month , one should complete his subjects or how many revisions does it require or anything key for preparing mains ?
This should be of great help to all of us aspirants.

Besides, one personal question regarding your comments on job acquittal. What do you say Sir ?
But , yes I am motivated and want to be in the list .

Jai Hind

NARESH JI,
I HAVE A TECHNICAL QUERY RELATED TO MY NAME. IN MATRIC CERTIFICATE MY NAME APPEARS AS "NAVREET KAUR" HOWEVER IN ALL THE CERTIFICATES +1ONWARDS TILL DATE, IT IS "NAVREET CHEEMA" ie MY CAST ALONGWITH FIRST NAME (IN MY PASSPORT TOO). I HAVE APPREARED IN CIVIL PRELIM THIS YEAR WHEREBY I HAVE MENTIONED MY NAME AS NAVREET KAUR AS THEY REQUIRED NAME AS PER MATRIC CERTIFICATE. SO I WISH TO ENQUIRE THAT WHETHER IT WILL CREATE ANY PROBLEM WHILE APPLYING FOR CIVIL. PLEASE ADVICE.

DEAR SIR,
I AM A CIVIL SERVICES ASPIRANT AND SEEK YOUR KIND GUIDENCE REGARDING TWO QUERIES OF MINE.
I MY MATRIC CERTIFICATE, MY NAME APPEARS AS "NAVREET KAUR", WHILE ALL OTHER CERTIFICATES OF MY MATRIC ONWARDS CARRYU NAME AS "NAVREET CHEEMA" (ON MY PASSPORT TOO). I WISH TO ENQURIE THAT AT THE TIME OF APPLYING FOR MAINS EXAM, WHEN MY CERTIFICATES WILL BE DEMANDED, WHETHER IT WILL CREATE ANY PROBLEM AS I HAVE FILLED THE FORM IN THE NAME OF "NAVREET KAUR" AS REQUIRED AND NOT "NAVREET CHEEMA" WHICH IS PREVALENT NOW.
SECONDLY, I WISH TO ENQUIRE THAT AN OBC CASTE CERTIFCATE NEEDS ANY RENEWAL AND IF YES AFTER WHAT PERIOD.
PLEASE ANSWER MY QUERY SOON AS I HAVE TO APPLY FOR MAINS EXAM. THANKS.

Don't worry Aditya,
Smriti is right in saying that as she might have known someone with that score as UPSC officially not come out with any cutoff, and 200+/-- 10 will be a good scroe in most of the subjects, but its also true 210 + is a safer bet but what matters is that ICS PRel is aonly a qualifier and its marks are not added so it should not be matter of worry,
so be sure and start preparation for mains,
cheers.

Hey naresh sir,

This one is mine fourth query but u didn't answer any of them but atleast from the above discussion i come to know tht 200+ - 10 is enough score to clear Pre but my confusion is tht i m getting 170 in socio but only 48 in GS total is 218

I want to know whether 48 marks is enough in GS to qualify Pre.

Can anyone from this blog answer to my query i'll thankful to him/her

@ Ratan : actually it seems if u r frm general category there may be some concerns but I wud suggest u sud be optimistic so why not prepare for this year mains only as that will also help in nxt yr prel in case sth happens or u not get good service this yr, so go for this yr mains.
@ nitwamit : I don't have marksheet of IAS 2007 topper as to access mksheet one need dob but this year topper put her mksheet on her blog so I provide that here with a link to her blog.

@navreet Kaur : regarding name change u have to officially change the name by giving notification in newspaper and sth like that some advocate may help in this regard.

@ Deep : there is no clear cut strategy to go for mains bcoz each has its own style of study and some grasp more some need more study to reach at a point and some can concentrate well and other need solitary space for preparation. so you have weigh ur pros and cons and decide fro urself but if u can mangae to 6-7 hrs of study and u can retain whatever u have sudied then i don't think u need to leave ur job but if u r better off u can take that risk.

@ Amoluck : there is only a little marks difference between Gen and OBc and evn SC and STs u can only see 10-20 marks difference only.

@ Deepak : sorry dear sometimes I have preoccupied with my work so can't post or reply but i think i have given answer to ur questn that no one knows for sure that there is any separate cutoff for GS and even UPSC is also mum on the issue so its really difficult to predict. And those saying that with
socio cutoff will be 250 I wud better keep my mouths shut bcoz most of those who have given knows the truth that with negative marking cutoff will be well below 250.

Cheers !

This is to seek your kind attention regarding HCS Exam-2009 conducted by HPSC. As you are aware that after 2004, HPSC conducted HCS preliminary exam on 26th April 2009 to fill 184 posts in various departments of Haryana Government.HPSC declared the result of same exam on 3rd May 2009 in your prestigious newspaper. Here I would like to tell you that even after assurance of higher transparency in recruitment process by new chairman [Mr. Batra], HPSC failed to prove it as-
* HPSC didn’t declare marks obtained by successful candidates in Preliminary exam and same is not informed to them.
* HPSC didn’t allow candidates to take away question paper along with them after exam. [Which is very much allowed in UPSC?]
On 3rd May 2009 HPSC mentioned cut-off marks for various categories as follows-
General BC ESM SC PH (Ortho)
119 113 85 92 104
The candidates were directed to obtain the Application Forms for the Main Exam w.e.f. 08.05.2009 from the office of the Haryana Public Service Commission, Bays No. 1-10, Block-B, Sector-4, Panchkula and submitted same before 25.05.2009.
What I came to know yesterday [14th June] that HPSC is reconsidering cut off marks for all categories after discovering some computer error [In answer sheets of almost all candidates who approached through RTI] and further postponed last date to fill form for main exam [18th June 2009] but HPSC did not communicated [Neither Publically nor personally] any further information to candidates regarding this matter. [Only few lucky or special candidates know about it. Further shocking is that HPSC accepted its mistake and allowed all these lucky or special candidates for main exam]. Even at this stage commission didn’t seem it necessary to communicate through any newspaper. There are rumors in civil services community that HPSC decreased cut-off marks from 119 to 111 for general category and eligible candidates can contact HPSC office at Panchkula to fill form for main exam[No public communication till date and HPSC is the only state public commission which doesn’t have any official website]
I am really surprised that why media remained inactive or silent in between regarding credibility of public commission when HPSC continuously remained accused of opaqueness in working since last decade.

UPSC not announce cut off as such so whatever sources are purely based on contacts and it seems last year cutoff is around 190 for OBC.
There are undercurrents going on that vacancies are increased but its not officially out yet.

Hi Guys

Here is good news for all of us.
I am really glad to apprise all of you that UPSC is going to shortlist around 13,000 candidates this year for Mains.
Number of posts has been estimated around 900-1000 for CSE-2009.

So Guys stop depriving yourself from Hope to get through Preliminary examination because i think Hope is the only companion which stays with us forever throughout life.

If you are expecting your score even around 180 then Plz start to equip yourself for next phase of battle.

I heard that result of CSP-2009 is supposed to come out on 30th July.

What you say about it guys..???

Take control
