KICK THE CO2 HABIT

World Environment Day, commemorated each year on 5 June, is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action.World Environment Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. Another resolution, adopted by the General Assembly the same day, led to the creation of UNEP.

'Kick the CO2 habit : Towards a Low Carbon Economy' is the slogan of this years WED (World Environment Day) 2008. Recognising that climate change is becoming the defining issue of our era, UNEP is asking countries, companies and communities to focus on greenhouse gas emissions and how to reduce them. The World Environment Day will highlight resources and initiatives that promote low carbon economies and life-styles, such as improved energy efficiency, alternative energy sources, forest conservation and eco-friendly consumption.
This year the host country for celebration of WED 2008 is New Zealand, one of the first countries to pledge a carbon-neutral future.

RAS 2008-2009

RAS Calendar prepared :
Government of Rajasthan has prepared the calendar of RAS and RTS exam and the government has send the vacancies to RPSC for the year 2008-2009, for the time being there are 125 state service vacancies and 26 subordinate services vacancies are there, the number of RAS proper vacancies will be send after DPC results of RAS officers.
The Chairman of RPSC Shri C R Chaudhary is trying hard from previous one year to make calendar of RAS exam so that every year exam can be conducted according to time schedule like ICS exam conducted by UPSC, According to this calendar each year in June RPSC will advertise vacancies for Rajasthan state and subordinate services exam in June and Prel exam will be conducted in Nov. or Dec. The number of vacancies will likely to be increased as some departments are yet to send their vacancies.
Its irony that whereas RAS 2007 is still uncertain to be held on time the RPSC and Government comes out with plan of new vacancies, but in one way its good that atleast it will held annually, lets see how far this will be viable.

Well you might be thinking I am mad to say that but this is not my finding but various indicators shows that. According to recently released report of GPI(Global Peace Index) by Vision of Humanity, it has been said that Iceland is the most peaceful country in the world, so isn't that COOL :), maybe its something related to its name ICE depicts white colour and the white colour signifies peace.
In the survey of 140 countries(last year it was 121 countries) across the world from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, Nordic countries comes out on the top of the list with Denmark and Norway securing third and fourth ranks in the list and if you think rich countries can secure high rank then think twice as only one out of G8 countries secure Top 10 rank, with Japan securing fifth rank.

Other key findings:

-- Small, stable and democratic countries are the most peaceful -16 of the top 20 are western or central European democracies
-- The G8 fared very differently: Japan (5), Canada (11), Germany (14), Italy (28), France (36), UK (49), United States (97), Russia (131)
-- Iraq is the lowest ranked country on the Index (140)

India ranked 107th this year performing better than only Pakistan(127) and SriLanka(125) among its neighbouring countries, but it improved its rank from previous year of 109 and also its score improved slightly from 2.530 in 2007 to 2.355. GPI : Global Peace Index

The Global Peace Index is an attempt to measure the relative position of nations’ and regions’ peacefulness. It is maintained by the Economist, an international panel of peace experts from peace institutes and think tanks, together with the Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies, University of Sydney, Australia. The list was launched first in May 2007 and the second list is published in May 2008 and is claimed to be the first study to rank countries around the world according to their peacefulness. The study is the brainchild of Australian entrepreneur Steve Killelea and is endorsed by individuals such as the Dalai Lama, Nobel Laureates Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Professor Joseph Stiglitz and Professor Muhammad Yunus as well as the Fulbright Center.

This year the Index has been expanded to rank 140 countries - from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe - according to how peaceful they are, both domestically and how they interact with the outside world. The Index is constructed from 24 indicators of external and internal measures of peace including UN deployments overseas and levels of violent crime.

And if you are thinking to go for self-study then also this subject will not create any problem as such as it not has much jargon of itself, go through standard books and you can score good marks in this. Keep abreast of new happenings and if possible quote from books and journals.
What you should take care while answering is that you should present your answer with proper facts and reason and not just plain copying from book, analysis is very important in this subject also like most of other optionals.
